I’m a freelance writer. I write for a variety of companies, trying to get information out there about their industry while establishing them as subject matter experts. It’s good pay, and I work from home, working the hours I want. I even set up a little website to market my services.
But let me tell you, it’s hard work. You need to know the topic you are writing about. My clients can come at me with topics ranging from chemical reactions in hair products to the aerodynamics of foreign vehicles. To do them justice, I have to research this stuff before I can write about it. If I don’t get the details right, it impacts them and then I’m out of a job.
So my suggestion to aspiring writers is this: it’s not just a matter of being a good writer. You need to be good at research and taking direction from others. If not, you may want to choose a different vocation.
I think freelance writing is okay as a career, but I recently got a job as a dental hygienist in Los Angeles. Wow, imagine the clients I have seen in the past few days. From Demi Moore to Sara Jessica Parker. It’s amazing how many people want white teeth. You should look into that work too!
I agree with Sel, I’m a Dentist in West Palm Beach and have had alot of success in my career. It’s a great time to get into school, even if financing is a little hard to come by. If there is a will there’s a way!
As a young girl I often wanted to peruse a career in sales, and there are so many opportunities for online sales. Maybe look into that?
I love doing my freelance writing jobs! There is so much to learn because I have such a variety of clients such as yourself. It is great experience.
Yes, you’re right. In this line work, you can’t really wing it everytime. Yes, you have to be creative with what you write. But before you can write anything, you have to have all the facts first.
Great post!
