People typically make payments using cash or credit cards. Some people still use checks. However a few cutting-edge folks are starting to use a new method of payment. That method is mobile billing.

Mobile billing allows you to make payments for products or services using your cell phone. There are a few different types of mobile payment options:

  • Scan the phone and charge your bank account. Your phone may come enabled with an RFID chip or you may get a sticker with this chip to put on your phone. The phone can then be scanned at the point of sale. The chip is linked with your bank account. Payment is taken from the account like it would be with a debit card. You receive a receipt via text message.
  • Scan the phone and charge a new account. Sometimes you do the same thing but you set up your own account with the company and that’s the account that gets charged. You then pay that bill each month.
  • Charge it to the cell phone. You can make payments for some services by having the charge added to your cell phone bill. This is common when purchasing premium SMS services like daily weather updates.

This sure sounds convenient, but before you do your first transaction this way, check with your service provider to be sure you’re not getting charged for doing it. Those little charges do add up.

This sounds like it would be a great time saver for a busy guy like me. I need to check this out to see if I can do this through my current phone company.
